Personally loved it but far too many fan boy nods to other Alien films which were unnecessary. I wanted Romulus to have it's own identity but in the end felt like a mishmash of what we'd seen before. That doesn't mean as a huge Alien franchise fan that I didn't get a lot of fun from it.

I have a lot to defend for on this one. Even if I miss the stream I will try to list why and hope Barry discusses it with me ✊⭐️

If Romulus didn't please fans then nothing will. Was a great movie that went back to a more basic premise and without the convoluted things in Covenant and Prometheus.

Excellent review, Barry Science fiction is my favorite genre in movies. The original Alien and Aliens are among my all time favorite movies. Alien: Romulus wasn't as good as I thought it would be. And I didn't like the hybrid at the end, but I wouldn't be surprised if it grows on me one day.

just finished the movie and i enjoyed it. no stupid characters making infuriating braindead decisions, it's a lot of suspense and mystery for the first two acts. the bellboy design is underwhelming, almost comical. i'm personally more interested in this other toy, the cymbals clapping monkey toy. we saw in one shot that it clapped but we dont know what it does and what it summons

Amazing film. I am fan of Sam Claflin and have been holding out on watching because of how Clare is abused. However this film is a masterpiece, beautifully written. Costumes amazing. Aisling Franciosi so string in the role. Baykali Ganambarr as the aboriginal guide funny and sad at times. Sam Claflin was brilliant at Hawkins that you hated him so much. This is the rom com king!! Showed how convicts and indigenous people were treated by those on charge for there own means. Even the shooting if the young boy english convict played by the excellent Charlie Shot well. Film was probably tame to what really happened in the early 1800s where convicts were hung including women and children or flogged. For stealing fish from lakes or berries from trees. Watch this film 10/10. This is what film making should be. Quality!

I agree 1000%, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake is WAY better than the original! I love that film so much!

I really liked the film.... just not the ending. Confronting a single Xeno/Hybrid and then sucking it through airlock has just been done so many times before. Why follow suit when you could've been more creative and original. Romulus would have benefited from being 20-30 mins longer. A more inventive ending and an extra epic action scene in the middle could have made this movie nearly as good as the 1st two in the franchise. Maybe there will be a deleted scenes version in the future 🤔

I can’t tell what was worse, the Xenomorph from the original surviving, or Ian Holm CGI. Every time Not Ash showed up on screen, my fiancé and I started laughing pretty loudly. What a waste of money.

I always find it interesting that people kind of ignore the phrase "A long time ago in the galaxy far far away" Star Wars takes place in the distant PAST. But also- SW is science FANTASY. ST is science FUTURE. Star Trek is plausible as future reality. Star Wars is like the Dark Crystal in space.

To me, Prometheus is the third best film in the franchise. Romulus is one of the weakest. Theres better acting in AVP Requiem

The people who dont like prometheus / covenant should be happy. The small change of lore around the black goop completely minimises their input in the overall franchise. Now neither the engineers or david create the Alien, they just use a resource from it. I think this has been done as the engineer plot isn't likely to continue, but it still leaves it open. I also think the baby creature wasn't an engineer / xeno, blue face is just a side effect of humanoid black goop abuse, and the engineers are goop addicts. They have used black goop to physically improve, weyland yutani want to achieve the same hardiness for their workforce.

The story was dumb as Hell. You guys that are drunk on the Production Design and Props will eventually wake and realize this is a badly paced, boring movie that you won’t want to re-watch the way we re-watch Alien and Aliens. It’s not even in the same league as those films. The director tried to go in too many directions and do too much too fast. For me, this did not work-I almost walked out when the alien caught the girl in the elevator shaft WITH IT’S TAIL.. like.. what?!? Did a CHILD direct this thing???

It's a great point that, although not exclusive, Star Trek Is more suited to an episodic format while Star Wars works better in movie form. I am a huge fan of Star Trek and even though I would have been 9 when TNG came to UK TV, TOS and the movies were already a solid foundation for my love of the show. I keep getting told off in that Star Wars is Science Fantasy but I see it through the lens of Sci-fi. We had Return of the Jedi recorded off TV since I was young and I watched it so many time. Even though it is on of my favourite movies of all time I would say I like Star Wars but love Star Trek.

Great audio and visuals, great set design, GREAT! practical effects, wallgina scene was the best, hate the use of classic lines from other films - embarrassing, hate prometheus connection, hate prometheus is canon, hate the stupid engineer with the tail - fucking lack of creativity, hate ridley... fucking ridley is the biggest problem... he started a strong stage of this rot and he keeps his paw on this franchise to rot. With his destruction of Giger's Space Jockey idea, with his strong desire to erase Giger's aesthetic, with his stupid connection of the Alien to human history, references to antiquity, Michelangelos, Davids, Wagners, Jesuses, Romuluses... ssuch hoity-toity... "I am such a great philosopher!", "I am such a great intellectual!"... so arrogant... inflated ego... he pumped up what he could... he pumped up to the limits of possibilities and embarrassment... he blew up a little more... and it fucked up! ...this franchise is dead. ...but there is no point in being sad, we have all those beautiful Giger's works after all!

When this came out, despite the hype I thought it was ok. I may need to give it a revisit, as I think one needs to be in the right frame of mind for it. It’s certainly not the movie it appears to be on the surface (at least for me).

Barry, great vid. You know via twitter / X that i've tried with this movie a few times. I "get" the themes and nuances of it etc. I agree with your conclusions here a lot, as much as i dislike the "watching" of the movie, i appreciate it's content and how it was done

the first time we see him watching her, she comes to him, to his house. he latches on to this girl who doubtless reminds him of his sister, and following and observing her and her friends gives him an idea of what it is he wants to do. remember, this was a standalone film, originally. the sister angle was cooked up for the sequel.

How could this be misunderstood? To be semi-fair, I just watched it a couple months ago for the first time and I had heard that it dealt w depression and was very symbolic Even still, i think its pretty obvious whats going on
